USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. In 1994, Compaq, DEC, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NEC, and Nortel collaborated to develop USB Cables. USB data cables are the standard connection between computers and devices like keyboards, printers, cameras, storage devices, etc. The purpose of developing these data cables was to simplify software configurations, address usability issues and have great data transfer rates for external devices. In 1995, these companies formed a USB implementers forum. It is a non-profit organization created to support the advancement of USB technology and high-quality compatible devices. They are available in multiple types and that can make it difficult to understand each of them. It even becomes difficult for you to purchase them and you might end up having the wrong cables. There are new developments going on and every two to three years, there is a new cable in the market. That makes it more difficult to understand the differences between them. But, don’t worry here in this article we will be discussing types of USB data cable: Initially, data cables had a low transfer speed of 1.5 megabits per second. Whereas, some had a high transfer rate of 12 Mbps. Over the years of constant change, today multiple types are available with the different transfer rates. Types of USB Data Cables: Universal Serial Bus Type A: A-type connector is the most common type found in PCs or charger cables. It is a flat rectangular interface that joins directly into the devices. This type builds a continuous connection between devices and is also easy for the users to remove it. There are multiple variations between these types. It is also useful to connect keyboards, printers, mouse, etc. with the computer. Universal Serial Bus Type B: USB type B is useful previously in printers. But, with the new technology coming up and introduction to wireless printers, we use USB type B in mobile phones as Micro-USB B adapters. These types of USBs are also useful in mobile printers, external hard drives, etc. It has a square interface and is available in Micro-USB B, USB Mini-b (5-pin) and USB Mini-b (4-pin). Universal Serial Bus Type C: The new type of connector in the market is Type C. It is one size and fits all solutions. It is reversible means you can plug it upside-down, has a symmetrical interface, thinner than other types and has a sleek design. It intends to replace the older and larger USBs; it supports legacy connectors as well. It has a small size which helps us to connect with a single USB connector shape, it, in turn, is helping us to eliminate the need of the various types of cables. It has high and powerful data transfer speeds. It is even a standard now for new laptops, tablets, and phones. Mini Universal Serial Bus: The introduction of this cable that has a 5 pin connector happened in 2005. It is a miniaturized form of USB cables and is useful in smaller devices. They are compatible with mobile devices, cameras, and MP3 players. Even today, there are some devices that are compatible with Mini USB. Micro Universal Serial Bus: It is a miniaturized version of USB and is available in three versions: micro A, micro B and micro USB 3. Additionally, it has a group pin on the sides which are twice the size of the wire, this enables USB 3 to have a great speed. Universal Serial Bus 3: These cables are backward compatible. It means that they work with older USB ports. These cables have a different shape of pins so they can be of use frequently. But, to gain a higher speed, you need to make sure that the device is USB 3 compatible. These cables are basic and have turned out to be the necessary part of our lives now.
